Public transport is very cheap in Paraguay, but slow and tiring, as it is noisy, polluting and often not air-conditioned.
Taxis and Bolt are practical and cheap, but will not cover all the cities a little far from Asuncion.
Scooters and motorbikes are a fast way to get around, but riding a motorbike is really dangerous. You should also forget about bicycles and electric two-wheelers. Drivers are not used to them and do not take them into account.
Rental cars:
Both international and local rental companies are present at the airport. The vehicles are clean, with low mileage and well maintained.
Prices are international. Expect to pay from €250 per week and more, depending on the model and insurance.
This is the solution to choose if you do not plan to spend more than 3 to 4 months a year in Paraguay.
Used car:
You should be aware that one of the real problems in everyday life in Paraguay is finding a good mechanic. A significant proportion of them do anything they like, often even irresponsibly with the safety mechanisms.
At the same time, car owners neglect maintenance due to lack of financial means.
Finally, the state of the roads in Asunción is poor and the cars are put to the test.
The three factors combined make it very difficult to assess the real state of health of a second-hand car, unless you are an expert, at least of the model you are interested in.
You should also bear in mind that if you are only here for a few weeks at a time, you don’t want your second-hand car to be immobilized for weeks on end while it is being repaired and waiting for spare parts to be imported.
Don’t expect to bring your own car from your country of origin, the costs are prohibitive and the administrative procedures dissuasive.
New vehicle:
The most expensive solution, but much safer than a second-hand car.
